NORTHEAST OHIO (WOIO) - If you think you've been busy getting ready for the holidays? Well the U.S. Postal Service has you beat.
Today is their busiest day. Their job is to get your holiday packages where they need to go on time and in good shape. But there are some things you can do to help.
"Mail early, mail early and mail early," said David Van Allen of the U.S. Postal Service. "Your deadline is Thursday for first class mail. Friday for priority mail. After that you will need to look at using express mail if you want it there by the holidays."
Monday alone they expected 658 million pieces to go through their system. On an average day, it's around 528 million pieces.
Plenty of people were dropping off their packages at the main post office on Orange Avenue.
One woman told us, "I'm sending it to my sister, who's teaching English in China. This is the busiest day for the post office. I did not know that otherwise I would have stayed at the office."
Van Allen says she could have, "People can mail online and print out their own postage, prepare their package and leave them for their carrier by going to U.S.P.S.com."
So Joe Lang didn't have to haul an armload of boxes to the post office today, "Got another armful in the car."
Here are some other holiday mailing tips for you:
- Remove or mark out any conflicting address info
- Print in all CAPS
- Spell out the city name and abbreviate state names
- Include apartment numbers
- Use abbreviations for Avenue, Street, Lane and for directions (N for North, S for South, E for East and W for West)
"Inside the package put a shipping label. In other words, something with where it's going to and where it's coming from. That way if something does happen the postal service can get the contents where they need to go," Van Allen added.
