A store owner is dead after trying to stop a robbery at his store Friday night. It happened at Well's Fashions Clothing Store on Kinsman Avenue just before 8 p.m.
Cleveland Police say two suspects attempted to rob the store. As the suspects were fleeing, the owner, a 54-year-old man who friends later identified as Will, chased them. While he was chasing them, one of the suspects fired a shot at Will hitting him in the chest.
EMS transported him to MetroHealth Medical Center where he later died.
At the store today, people say Will lived long enough to tell someone to dial 911.
"I walked outside, and he was walking towards the door and asked me to call police, and that's the last time I saw him be cause he collapsed in his doorway," said Bob Batch, whose family owns the convenience store next door.
People who knew Will say he was the greatest guy who would do anything for anyone. His 7-year-old son would come to work with him.
"His son is real bright, real impressionable. So we were just talking about how it's probably going to tear him up," said Mike Wynn who owns Lifestyle Barbershop located on the other side of the clothing store. Wynn used to cut the victim's son's hair.
The guys at the barbershop next door say you would often hear music coming from his clothing store, and you'd see him dancing around.
"It's sad, but that's the world we live in. It's a shame it came to this, that you can't even make a living, and you might be killed," added Wynn.
