Willoughby chase suspect on the loose

WILLOUGHBY, OH (WOIO) -

Police are looking for a suspect who led them on a chase early Monday morning and struck a police cruiser.

The chase began around 1:20 a.m. on Maplegrove Road, when officers stopped the driver for a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped in the parking lot of the Motel 6 and then allegedly showed the officer false identification.  As the officer began to question the identity of the driver, the male placed the car into drive and drove further into the Motel 6 parking lot.

The officer followed the vehicle into the parking lot and located it behind the motel. Upon locating the vehicle, the officer exited and told the driver to exit his vehicle. The driver then drove forward, striking the front end of the officer's police car. The driver then backed up and drove around the officer, ultimately leaving the parking lot.

The original officer, along with an additional Willoughby Police car then pursued the vehicle onto IR 90 W/B from SR 91. The vehicle continued W/B on IR 90, until an attempt by the suspect was made to exit at the US 20 exit ramp.

The suspect's vehicle went off the side of the road and then attempted to travel E/B in the W/B lanes. The officer then utilized his police vehicle to block the path of the suspect's vehicle, so that it would not travel against traffic on the interstate.

As a result, contact between both vehicles was once again made, but suspect's vehicle was now turned around and continued W/B on IR 90.

Officers continued pursuing the vehicle, which exited at the East 260th ramp in Euclid. The suspect then re-entered the interstate, continuing W/B. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle exited at East 185th Street, left the roadway and struck a utility pole, disabling the vehicle.

Upon officers reaching the vehicle, the operator had since fled on foot and was not located.
