Warning: Before you fire up the space heater

(WOIO) -

People's furnaces got a break from the bitter cold this week, but get ready to crank them up again Thursday night or you can fire up a space heater.

Space heaters are a big hit this time of year. When you get that little chill, folks grab their handy space heater, plug it in and relax.

Not so fast.  Doug turner of the Parma Fire Department says keep the heater at least 36-inches away from any combustible materials, including curtains, beds and furniture to make sure you don't set your house on fire.

He also says there are some things you should look for when you buy a space heater.

"Some of the features on this one are that it has a screen on so you can't actually touch the heating element.  This one if it tips will also shut off or if it get over heated it will shut off for a period of time and kick back on.  So those are some of the things you're looking for when you purchase a space heater," said Doug Turner, Parma Fire Department.
