Cell phone ban still up for debate at Cleveland City Council - Cleveland 19 News Cleveland, OH

Cleveland City Council cell phone ban closer to becoming a reality

A debate over what could be one of the strictest cell phone bans in the state is taking place behind closed doors at Cleveland City Council.

The proposed bill would toughen the state law, which only bans texting.

The Cleveland bill would require drivers to use hands free devices.

It would also be a primary offense, meaning police don't need another reason to pull you over, if they catch you on the phone.

"You go across the county and 80% believe to have a ban on texting while driving and 60% believe you have a ban on all cell phone use. It's dangerous, there is nothing safe about it," said Councilman Zack Reed.

The bill heads to the Finance Committee before the full council votes.
