Tony's Take on Chris Perez

Cleveland (WOIO) - Chris Perez is my favorite player on the Indians. He's honest, outspoken, and most of all, he delivers. He's been an All-Star the past two seasons, and during that span racked up 75 saves for the Tribe, including 39 in 2012. Yet, throughout the offseason, many fans wanted to cut ties with the Indians closer. Ironic, in my opinion, because all Perez has done since coming aboard is speak the truth. Maybe Jack was right. Maybe you can't handle the truth.

Perez got into hot water last summer when he criticized Indians fans for not showing up to the ballpark while the Tribe was still in contention. He compared the lack of fan support to the Browns' situation, asking how Cleveland's favorite team gets a free pass, despite yearly struggles.

He also took a shot at Tribe management, for failing to make a trade before the deadline, and, in the end, criticized former manager Manny Acta for not showing enough support, and fire, for his players during critical moments of the season.

You know what? Perez was right. About all of it. I found it honest, and refreshing. I'm also glad he's back. Being a closer isn't always easy...they're not always 1-2-3 innings, but Perez and Pestano make up the best set-up man/closer combination in baseball. We're lucky to have them.
