ETX family seeking help after fire

An East Texas man is having to find someplace to stay until he can repair his home that a fire heavily damaged.

The fire started just after 2 p.m. in the 6-thousand block of County Road 384 in northeastern Smith County.

The Smith County Fire Marshal said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but he believes a malfunction with the water heater could have started the fire.

The homeowner, Paul Chapman, said he is a single parent and does not have any insurance.

"We just got our power and water cut back on, just got another vehicle, got back to work and now this," Chapman said.

Chapman said no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. He estimates about $30,000 dollars in repairs.

"We need to come together as neighbors, and friends and Christians and help him out because he's trying. It seems like the more he tries the more stuff happens," said Chapman's friend Delia Gray.

Jackson Heights, Winona and Chapel Hill fire crews all responded to the scene.

The homeowner said a neighbor has offered his family a place to stay until the repairs can be made. Gray said she will work to set up a fund to help with the costs.
