Middlefield officers involved in deadly traffic stop shooting identified

MIDDLEFIELD, OH (WOIO) -

Two Middlefield police officers shot during a traffic stop on Sunday evening have been identified

Officer Brandon Savage has served on the Middlefield force for the past five years. Officer Savage sustained minor injuries to his left knee from flying fragments. He was treated and released from University Hospital in Geauga and is home recovering.

Officer Erin Thomas was hired in February of 2013, but she is a veteran officer with five years of experience. Officer Thomas sustained serious injuries to her left hand and fingers, shrapnel was embedded in her right wrist and she also sustained a gunshot wound to her left thigh. She underwent surgery at Metro and remains hospitalized.

Officers pulled the driver, identified as 42-year-old James L. Gilkerson, over around 6 p.m. in the area of North State Avenue near Tare Creek Parkway.

Gilkerson exited his vehicle armed with a semi automatic rifle, and started shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire, and killed the Mentor on the Lake man.

The Geauga County Sheriff's Office and Ohio BCI are both investigating.
