STEUBENVILLE, OH (WOIO) -

The high-profile rape trial in Steubenville began at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, but the protests have been on going. Both local and national organizations here to make a point. The rape of a 16-year-old girl was not taken seriously and the two football players involved were given special treatment.

The claim is that if a video and pictures of the incident had not been posted on social media sites, the crime never would have been brought to trial.

Malik Richmond and Trent Mays are the teens charged. Both were star players on the storied Steubenville Big Red football team. Steubenville is a football-crazed town, and the anger over the way the case was handled had to with the claim that their status on the team led to delays in prosecution.

It wasn't until ten days after the incident that the teens were arrested.

Lawyers for the teens say the contact, which was digital penetration, was consensual.  Prosecutors say she was too drunk to consent. The lead prosecutor said simply, we don't have to prove she said no, but couldn't say anything.

The case has divided the town sharply.
