MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

Just before 7:30 Wednesday morning the Montville Police Department along with the Medina Life Support Team and the Medina Fire Department responded to an injury crash in the 7400 block of Wooster-Pike.

Police say John Harvey, 36, of 7487 Wooster Pike Rd. entered northbound on Wooster Pike from Summerwood Drive, driving a slow moving farm tractor hauling six large bails of straw on a utility trailer.

Timothy E. Cox, 49, of 307 Elyria St, Lodi, was northbound on Wooster Pike driving a Dillon Transportation Semi-Tanker loaded with liquid asphalt.

It appears that Cox ran in to the rear of the farm tractor and trailer combination, ejecting Harvey and pushing the farm tractor and trailer off the right side of the roadway.

"I heard a big boom and felt the house shake so I ran out the front door. There was no helping. He was pretty stuck in there. I am just glad there wasn't a fire," said witness, Jim Presley. "The semi hit the back of the trailer. It threw the driver of the tractor off. He lost control of the truck. Luckily he didn't run over my neighbor," Presley added.

The semi-tractor and tanker combination then rolled over and traveled partially off the right side of the roadway, spilling part of the liquid asphalt onto the roadway and shoulder.

"The tractor sheered off a natural gas main. So we had a natural gas leak about fifty feet away from this natural gas leak. The gas company was on scene and able to contain that within the first hour for us," said Montville Fire Chief, Bob Painter.

Emergency personnel from the Medina Fire Department, Medina Life Support Team and Metro Life Flight, worked tirelessly for three hours to free Cox who was trapped in the cab of his semi. Cox remained alert and responsive during the entire ordeal.

John Harvey was up walking around after the crash and was as evaluated by Seville Guilford EMS on scene. Harvey refused immediate medical treatment, but later was seen at a local emergency room where he was treated and released.

The crash remains under investigation and witnesses are still being interviewed. At this time it is too early in the investigation to determine the at-fault party; therefore no charges have been issued. The speed limit in that area of Wooster Pike is 55mph.

The roadway is reopened as of 6pm.
