Boston Marathon runner finishes the race in Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Monday was Sandy Overstreet's first run in a week.

It's unusual for the avid runner to wait this long between sets, but it's with good reason: her last run was the Boston Marathon, where she was just a few miles from where the bombs detonated.

"There were swat teams out. It was surreal," Overstreet said.

Overstreet said her hamstring was giving her problems that day and slowed down her pace.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because had she run any faster, she would've been that much closer to the blasts.

"I didn't believe it. I didn't believe a bomb had gone off," she said.

Overstreet had run about a dozen Boston Marathons before, but this year, she wasn't able to finish.

Instead she saw people heading towards her, running the other way.

"Someone came up to me and said, ‘There was a bombing at the finish line. You don't have to run anymore,'" Overstreet said.

Monday evening, Sandy completed those unfinished miles.

She participated in Run for Boston, an event held by Fit Right Northwest.

Right by her side was fellow runner and friend Linda Labash.

Labash had run the marathon five times, but not this year.

"It just makes me want to go back and do it again and erase those terrible images from my mind and have it be like what it's supposed to be," Labash said.

For the pair, this 5k held special meaning.

It was a way for them to show their support to those affected by the bombings and for Overstreet, a finish line to what she started a week ago.

"I just wanted to be here to honor the marathon. Running a week after not finishing — it's nice closure," Overstreet said.
