Donate airline miles to Make-A-Wish

Make-A-Wish® is in urgent need of frequent flier miles and is requesting support from local media to help raise awareness on mileage donations to Make-A-Wish in celebration of World Wish Day on Monday, April 29, 2013.

On April 29, members of the community can call in to a phone bank of volunteers from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with their airline account number ready to donate their Delta, United/Continental and U.S. Airways airline miles to Make-A-Wish. Callers are encouraged to keep trying if the line is busy.

The number to donate miles during the mileathon is 1-888-272-9474. Mileage donations can also be made online anytime by clicking here.

"Air travel is a critical resource as we work to grant the heartfelt - and oftentimes very creative - wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions," said Sophia Morton, Vice President of Program Services for Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana. "Donating airline miles will allow us to continue creating hundreds of lasting moments for children with life-threatening medical conditions."

More than 75 percent of wishes require air travel, making it a critical - and costly - resource to Make-A-Wish.

In fact, approximately 1,500 airline tickets, the equivalent of 80 million airlines miles, are needed each year to get Ohio Wish Children and their families to and from these incredible experiences.

"Donating miles is a simple and easy way to make a difference in the lives of our Wish Children," said Morton. "Once miles are donated to Make-A-Wish, they are transferred instantaneously and put to work right away on local wishes. They never expire and can be combined with other miles we've received."

World Wish Day is a celebration more than 30 years in the making: in 1980, a 7-year-old boy received his heartfelt wish to be a police officer for a day.

That one wish inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish and launched the wish granting movement that circles the globe today.

During the month of April, Make-A-Wish chapters throughout the country are raising awareness on the need for frequent flier miles to fund airline tickets for wishes that involve travel.
