(WOIO) - Nine months ago truck stop tycoon Jimmy Haslam rode into our town on a white horse with a promise to save our floundering football team. How quickly things have changed. Now, Haslam is fighting for the survival of his company much less his reputation and Browns fans are left feeling snake bit.
As you may have heard by now, Haslam's company, Pilot Flying J, is the target of a federal investigation. The Feds say the company is suspected of ripping off its own customers. Now, no one's been charged with any crime yet and Haslam insists he's done nothing wrong. But when the FBI shows up at your door unannounced, accompanied by the IRS…. There's reason to worry.
At this point, what's best for Haslam may be what's best for the Browns. He ought to consider stepping away from any direct management responsibilities with the team to concentrate on cleaning up his legal mess---and thus avoid becoming a distraction to the team he promises to turnaround.
