Middlefield PD Chief releases dash cam in deadly officer-involved shooting

MIDDLEFIELD, OH (WOIO) -

19 Action News has obtained dash cam video of a deadly police-involved shooting in Middlefield.

The shooting happened on March 10 during a traffic stop in the area of North State Avenue near Tare Creek Parkway.

Before the Middlefield officers could even get out of the cruiser, James Gilkerson, 42, grabbed his semi-automatic AK-47 rifle and opened fire on the officers.

The officers returned fire, and killed Gilkerson.

Hundreds of rounds of ammunition were found in Gilkerson's car. Also found - another rifle, gunpowder, ammunition boxes and several books and videos describing tactics of violence.

The police cruiser driven by the officers was riddled by bullets. 37 fired by Gilkerson, some 50 rounds were fired by officers.  Some of the rounds fired by Gilkerson's powerful weapon penetrated the transmission and engine block.

Officer Erin Thomas had serious gunshot injuries to her left hand, shrapnel was embedded into her right wrist and she had a gunshot wound to her left thigh. She underwent surgery a Metro, and has since recovered from her injuries.

Officer Brandon Savage had minor injuries to his left knee from flying fragments. He is back on the job.

An investigation into the deadly shooting has officially been ruled justified.
