Construction at Bayshore and Route 2 affecting Oregon business - Cleveland 19 News Cleveland, OH

Oregon road closes for 45 days

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two big road construction projects could slow drivers heading east of Toledo down.

Bayshore Road in Oregon was closed Monday, and another project is having a bigger impact.

Ohio Route 2 at the Lucas-Ottawa County line has been closed at the Bono curve since late February, and has at least two more weeks to go.

Road closure signs have been placed at least seven miles ahead of the work, and it has affected businesses that have seen regular customers disappear.

Angela Moore of DG's Ice Cream says they rely on the Cedar Point crowd. Since drivers can't easily get there now, sales are down.

"We have a lot of people stopping in, wondering how to get out to Cedar Point, wanting directions," Moore said. "So it hasn't affected us majorly, but it has taken its toll."

The best detour around the Route 2 closure is State Route 579.

Back on Bayshore Road, crews will build a new bridge as part of the Oregon Flood Relief project. The road will be closed for 45 days.

Local traffic can get through, but other vehicles – including emergency crews – have to find another way around.

"For us as police officers, and also our fire division, if it's actually causing a road closure, we come up with secondary routes on how we're going to work through things on our emergency calls and so forth," explained Sgt. Tony Castillo with the Oregon Police.
