CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

The Chardon School Board has selected Dr. Michael Hanlon to serve as the district's new superintendent beginning August 1, 2013.

Dr. Hanlon, who will be leaving his position as Painesville City Schools superintendent in July, will replace Joseph Bergant, who announced last year that he would resign from the district at the end of 2012-13 school year.

Board of Education President Karen Blankenship said she is pleased with the board's decision to appoint Hanlon. The vote was unanimous. Blankenship said Hanlon's experience as a superintendent and his proven leadership capabilities stood out during the selection process.

"There are a lot of educational changes coming such as the new teacher/principal evaluations and the new common core standards. We need a knowledgeable professional who can hit the ground running.  Dr. Hanlon has the depth of knowledge we need. All around, his strengths fit us well." noted Blankenship.

Dr. Hanlon received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Cleveland State University, where he also earned his bachelors and masters degrees.

Prior to his time in Painesville, he spent five years as a teacher in Mentor, and five years as one of that district's principals. Hanlon has been superintendent at Painesville City Schools since July of 1998.

Dr. Hanlon says, "I'm committed to working together with staff and parents to improve student achievement and promote pride in the Chardon Schools. I'm looking forward to being an integral part of the Chardon community".
