Editorial: Movie Madness- The Sequel

(WOIO) -

When the self-congratulatory Hollywood types pass out their Golden Globes and Oscars next year, they need to give a shout-out to the generous citizens of Ohio.

Not only have we rolled out our red carpet--- closing our busy downtown streets and highways to accommodate the out-of-town filmmakers – but we've also opened up our pocketbooks in the form of massive movie tax credits. And what they give back in the form of local spending while they are here is puny regardless of what the local film commission says.

Now, we've been asking for weeks now - is it worth the inconvenience to tens of thousands of motorists and the tens of millions of dollars in tax give-a-ways that must be made up elsewhere?

And, it's good to see that we're not the only ones asking questions now.  At a recent meeting, Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed responded to our editorials and demanded answers as well.

The film crews may bring a little excitement to our streets on these spring days but don't believe the hype--that's about all they bring.

Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate and here's the address.
