AVP Tour coming to Cincinnati


The AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) Pro Beach Volleyball Tour officially announced that its 2013 tour will make a stop at the Lindner Family Tennis Center over Labor Day weekend for the AVP Cincinnati Open, August 30-September 2. 

The announcement was made at a press conference on the grounds of the Tennis Center that featured AVP star Todd Rogers, an Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time champion at Cincinnati. 

The Cincinnati Open marks the second stop on the late-summer tour, which will be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio and will feature a field of 16 two-player men's teams and 16 two-player women's teams. 

"I was so glad to see the Cincinnati Open on the 2013 schedule," Rogers said. "The tournament is always a first-class operation at the Tennis Center. I've been fortunate enough to play beach volleyball in some amazing places across the United States and around the world, but coming back to the Lindner Family Tennis Center is a little bit like coming home for me. There are a lot of memories here for me, so this is definitely a place I like to play." 

The Labor Day weekend tournament will bring the best of the beach to Cincinnati. AVP tournaments combine the fast-paced action of the world's fittest male and female athletes jumping, spiking and diving in the sand with a world-class beach-party atmosphere complete with great food, music and a sponsor village filled with fun activities.

With the top beach volleyball players now under exclusive contract to play in the AVP, Cincinnati will host the country's best including: Players expected to appear in the Cincinnati Open include Olympic gold medalists Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, Olympic silver medalists Jen Kessy and April Ross, and Olympians Nicole Branagh, Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal. 

"We've been working very hard to put together the best possible tour for 2013, and we're confident that we'll have the country's best players competing week in and week out on the AVP tour," said Donald Sun, Owner of the AVP. "We're extremely appreciative of all the great people who have helped us to bring back the Cincinnati Open to a community we know is passionate about volleyball."

 In addition to the field of world-class players signed by the AVP, the tour announced it will hold a qualifying tournament to allow two additional teams per gender to play their way into the main draw of the tournament. The single-elimination qualifying tournament for the AVP Cincinnati Open will be held Friday, August 30. 

Tickets for the tournament will go on sale in Wednesday, June 26 and can be purchased at www.AVP.com.
