43 Forum: Fatherhood Initiative

Father's Day is coming up on June 16th. Fatherhood can be an opportunity to enjoy and enhance children's lives. It can also be a full time job.

Al Grahams, the director of the Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative Program, and Aaron Mitchell, a graduate of this program, speak with Harry Boomer during the 43 Forum about fatherhood and how Dads can learn to take on a more active role with their children through challenging times.

The Fatherhood Initiative Program helps Dads within Cuyahoga County. This program promotes four goals. 1) awareness of the importance of father involvement, 2) treating fathers in a friendly manner, 3) helping fathers meet emotional and financial needs, and 4) prevention of teen fatherhood.

The fourth annual Fatherhood Conference is coming up on June 14th to celebrate a healthy relationship between father and child and to learn how to cope with father absence.

Research shows that when fathers are involved in their children's life children are less likely to be involved in crime, less likely to drop out of school, less likely to do drugs, and less likely to become teen parents than if there is no father involvement.

Today almost 50% of children in Cuyahoga County and 66% in the City of Cleveland are growing up in single parent households.

Reconciliation is shown to be key in helping people move through hard times towards forgiveness.  The recommendation is to have those difficult conversations with loved ones, because those talks can lead to understanding and better times.

Children who have parents living apart from each other are said to benefit from seeing them communicate and assist in each other in supporting their children. Seeing this cooperation between parents builds character and confidence within the child.

Aaron Mitchell credits The Fatherhood Initiative for helping him re-establish the bond with his children. Aaron's close relationship with his children is a cherished Father's Day gift that keeps on giving.
