FEDS: Woman and child held against their will

Is this Ashland's version of a House of Horrors?

The Feds seem to think so -- but 19 Action News has talked to some who cast a lot of doubt on this case.

By 1:00 PM Tuesday afternoon the Feds in Cleveland were saying a home in Ashland was the site of what they call modern day slavery.

They claim a 30 year-old women, who has a mental disability from a brain injury, was being forced to live in the home with her daughter. They were made to clean, cook, and sleep on the floor. Officials say they were also threatened with pit bull and snake attacks for two years, until they were busted last October.

Police have charged are Jordie Callahan, Jessica Hunt and Daniel Brown.

Callahan's attorney claims all of this is false. He also says that the victim, whom we're not naming, could come and go as she pleased. Even moved with the group three times to have a place to stay.

"She had opportunities to leave, she left several times and came back. So this was a mutual arraignment for her," said Callahan's Attorney Andy Hyde. "I don't like that the Federal Prosecutors held a press conference, to pat themselves on the back, and file these charges for human trafficking. I think they're capitalizing on the Ariel Castro matter going on right now."

We spoke with neighbors who say they saw the victim several times walking in the neighborhood. Reports she was in a local Sunoco on almost a daily basis.

"Do you believe she was being held as a slave," asked Reporter Dan Deroos

"No. I don't believe that because like I said she down there. I picked her up at BP. I've seen her," answered neighbor Dave Toney.

"She never said anything to you about being held,"asked Deroos.

"Nope," said Dave.

The Feds claim the girl wouldn't have asked for help because the group was threatening her daughter. They even claim the group forced her to beat her own child and recorded it, threatening to turn it over to police if she ever escaped.

"The officers confronted her with video showing her beat her daughter and then she admitted to the beating. She was asked if anyone made her do it and she said no. She was caught and in trouble, she claimed to be the victim and claimed everything they did was oppressive and claimed they held her against her will," said Attorney Hyde.

    Medical Mutual of Ohio has confirmed that an employee sent 45 emails to the wrong person containing personal information for more than 6,000 of its Medicare Advantage customers.  According to a spokesperson for Med Mutual, based in Cleveland, this was an accident because the employee typed in an incorrect email address and the data was going to a third party that didn't have authorization to be looking at private information.
