Cleveland company helps Lakewood

Cleveland based Cliffs Natural Resources, an international mining and natural resources company, put their best resource, their people, to work Friday in Lakewood.

Volunteers from Cliffs were out of the office Friday, and instead, painting homes and cleaning up vacant lots in Lakewood.  It's part of the company's community outreach program.

Employees, like Jaimie Stemen, an accountant most days, a painter Friday, were happy to volunteer, "I feel like it gives you a chance to get out of the office, meet some people you don't work with everyday, and you feel like you've done something good," she said.

About 120 volunteers from Cliffs were at various work sights throughout Lakewood, they were working in conjunction with Lakewood Alive, a group that is dedicated to preserving Lakewood's historic housing.

"There is a tremendous amount of housing stock in Lakewood that has begun to age and losing that housing stock would be changing the complexity of Lakewood, period," said Lakewood Alive member Carl Orban.

And that's just one of the reasons the Lakewood group was thrilled for the help.

"They just really stepped up to the plate on this, we're very proud this is happening in Lakewood," Orban said.

It was a long hot day under the sun, but in the end all worth it, for Lakewood and these volunteers.

"When you see the finished product, at the end, it makes you feel good," said Stemen.
