Work in progress: Historical Cleveland building getting a makeover

The Schofield building as it sits right now on Euclid and 9th Street in downtown Cleveland is still under construction.  It's big and historical.  Built in 1903.

According to the City of Cleveland CRM Real Estate services located down the block is restoring it. The idea was born in 2009 and the city tossed in a $1.2 million loan.  The state of Ohio and the feds tossed in $14 million.

When it's done 55 new apartments over ground floor retail stores and a 122-room Kimpton Hotel.

CRM officials tell 19 Action News the outside of the building is changing slowly because they had to take off the old facade and put a new one to qualify for $14 million in state and federal tax credits.

Investors are not driven by time and it's allowed them to rework the interior of the building.

Three weeks ago CRM paid back the city loan and economic development officials with the city say the project is scheduled to be finished in December of 2014.
