Red light cameras could get banned in Ohio

(Toledo News Now) -

They generated plenty of controversy as well as plenty of cash for the City of Toledo over the years, but now a bill to ban most speed and red light cameras is on its way to the Ohio Senate.

With the exception of mobile speed units to enforce school zones, House Bill 69, approved by the Ohio House this week, would unplug red light and speed enforcement cameras across Ohio.

With the bill heading to the Ohio Senate, Edna Brown says she's generally in favor of the cameras as a way to free up time for police officers to focus on criminal activity.

"I was in favor when I was on city council here in Toledo," Brown said. "We were the first city to have these cameras and I look at them as a safety issue."

This year those cameras are expected to generate more than $4 million for Toledo, and Brown says she understands why people can be frustrated with the cameras, especially if they get a ticket.

"I also look at what I consider to be some abuses, and agree with some who say it's more of a revenue generator."

But Brown says she can envision the bill stalling in the Ohio Senate.

"I don't think it's a slam dunk. Matter of fact, it may not get approved in the Senate."

The Ohio Senate will take up the red light camera debate in the fall.
