A little boy is suspected of drowning at the Euclid Family YMCA on Tuesday.

According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, Lonnie Smith, Jr., 9, died from a probable drowning.

Emergency crews were called to the Babbitt Road YMCA around 3:15 p.m.

"He was pulled from the pool by one of three lifeguards on duty.  At the time there were approximately 26 children in the swimming pool.  He was  unresponsive.  He was immediately taken to Euclid General," said Rich Haase of YMCA Greater Cleveland.

The South Euclid child was rushed to Euclid Hospital ER before he was Life Flighted to Metro. He died a short time later.

"He had a sense of humor.  He was fun, fun loving, always like to joke and play.  We just always loved on one another everyday," said Lonnie's mom Sonya Smith.

Smith was at the pool on a field trip with his daycare center, Always Available Daycare. He was noticed missing by daycare personnel after a swimming session and discovered in the pool by a lifeguard.

Lonnie was Sonya's only child.

"He was born March 15th 2004 at Huron Road Hospital.  That was a very exciting moment," added Sonya.

The swimming pool at the Euclid Family YMCA will be closed until end of business on Friday, July 12.

The YMCA released the following statement late Wednesday afternoon:

YMCA of Greater Cleveland Members,
The safety and security of all those we serve is our top priority.
In the wake of the tragedy which occurred at the Euclid Family YMCA yesterday, (Tuesday, July 9, 2013), which regrettably resulted in the death of a nine-year-old boy, we will be closing the swimming pools at all YMCA of Greater Cleveland branches for the entire day on Thursday, July 11, 2013. All of our branches will remain open even though the pools will be closed.
We are closing the pools to conduct an in-depth in-service for all our Aquatics personnel across the Greater Cleveland YMCA Association. We are taking this important extra step to ensure that all our members will be safe and secure.
We realize this may be an inconvenience to some of you, and we apologize for that in advance. But we thank you for your continued cooperation and support.
