CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) -

In order to save money and energy during this heat wave, there are some things you might already know, like avoiding using heat-producing appliances in your home during the hottest part of the day, but 19 Action News spoke to an expert to learn a little more.

For more than a decade, Karen Browning only had air conditioning on the top level of her three story home that's more than 100 years old and just a few months ago, she got air-conditioning for the entire house.

"Amazing difference, Amazing difference.  We feel really lucky to have had this work done. We all sleep better," says Browning.

In part of her house, P.K. Wadsworth Heating and Cooling installed a mini-duct system, commonly used in older homes.

"It draws the air-conditioning into the room but it doesn't blow on you.  It draws the warm air to it as opposed to blowing the cold air on you so it's really more comfortable," said Paul Wadsworth, owner of P.K. Wadsworth Heating and Cooling.

There are other simple things you can do to keep your house cool too. "When the sun is beating in the windows, close the blinds on that side of the house. The sun is heating your house up," says Wadsworth. That should lower your bills and make the house more comfortable.

Experts also recommend having a professional check your heating and cooling units annually.

Wadsworth says, "studies have shown that you can reduce your cost of operation by 30% just by maintaining your system."

One other tip if you do have air conditioning, install a programmable thermostat and program it, you can really save money on your electric bill.
