PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Testimony is expected to resume Monday in the murder trial of former Phoenix police Officer Richard Chrisman.

Opening statements began Wednesday in Phoenix.

Chrisman faces second-degree murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty charges in the October 2010 death of 29-year-old Daniel Rodriguez at his south Phoenix home.

It is a rare occasion when a police officer stands trial for an on-duty shooting death.

The case pits one police officer's word against another's and hinges on key testimony, and physical evidence.

The officer's partner told investigators there was no threat against either him, or Chrisman during the call.

Chrisman maintains the shooting was justified because Rodriguez had reached for the officer's gun during a tussle, that preceded the shooting.

Chrisman has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The nine-year police veteran was fired about five months after Rodriguez's death.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy County Attorney Juan Martinez, just coming off the high-profile Jodi Arias case. The sentencing phase of that case is still pending.

Chrisman has veteran defense attorney Craig Mehrens as his counsel.
