ROLL CALL: Open slots in topnotch Cleveland schools

With the start of a new school year just weeks away, it's surprising that several of Cleveland's topnotch schools don't have families signing up for their waiting lists.  Instead many schools have a number of slots that are still open.

Students are already eagerly engaged in the learning process at the E-Prep Cliffs Superior campus.  Most schools, however, in Cleveland don't start until the 19th.

Megan O'Byan, Director of The Cleveland Transformation Alliance, says the district is working to get the word out to parents that there are still 100's of slots available for children in some of the highest performing schools.

"We want every seat in the school that are rated A and A+ filled with students who are ready to learn."

One of the best charter schools, sponsored by the CMSD, is the K-8/ E-Prep on East 36th Street.

"We have a hand full of spaces in the 5th and 6th grades and this school really specializes in taking those kids who haven't had a quality elementary school for their three or four years of school career and really bringing them up to and beyond grade level."

E-Prep and some other public and charter schools that are all tuition-free in Cleveland are rated either A or A+ by the state.

"I think parents are a real key to students' success and we do a lot of work reach out to our families to really make parent engagement as easy as possible.  At the end of the day though that can't be an excuse."

Many parents still don't know they have options and can choose not to send their children to the neighborhood school.  The United Way's 2-1-1 hotline is an available resource for parents to find a school of their choice.
