Cavs' soccer team earns 2-0 win in opening scrimmage

The Darton State Cavaliers kicked off their preseason with a 2-0 shutout win over Southern Poly Tech Friday.

The nation's third-ranked team scored once in each half on way to the preseason win.

"I thought we did well, all things considering," says head coach Bart Sasnett. "The field was very soft, messed up, and wet. So I thought the guys were very receptive and played well today."

The Cavaliers open the 2013 season once again near the top of the national rankings.

Sasnett feels his team has progressed greatly this offseason, but still has work to do.

"We have some problems in the back that we've worked on and have to get fixed," Sasnett says. "Going forward, we're a little bit better than I thought we'd be during this time of the year, so that's very good."

The Cavs' head coach says it's nice to start the season highly ranked.

But he also wants to wait until after his team plays their highly anticipated opener before putting too much weight into the polls.

"It's early. We open up against the number four team in the country, Monroe. After we play them, we'll see where we'll be ranked," Sasnett says. "Everything we do in camp and preseason and these scrimmages, they all help you build up for their first regular season match and ultimately help you get to where you need to be at the end of October."

The Cavaliers have two more scrimmages on the schedule before the season opener August 25 in Dunwoody.
