UC police using crime data to enhance safety plan

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) -

The University of Cincinnati conducted a study based on crime data from the last three to five years on where crime typically takes place and at what time.

What they found: Most robberies and assaults happen on the south side of campus and mostly occur between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The UC Police Department hopes this data approach will put police ahead of potential crimes by putting officers in spots where crime is most prevalent. The department is also putting more officers on the streets.

Thousands of students began the fall semester on Monday. One person who didn't leave campus for the summer was interim UC Police Chief Jeff Corcoran, who has been developing a new campus safety plan based on the study.

"Rather than flying by the seat of our pants, we are looking at data from the last three to five years seeing specifically where crimes are happening, what time they are happening, down even to the block of the street," Corcoran explained.

Corcoran would not say specifically which streets are seeing the most crime, but did point out the south side of campus. He says many of the 8,000 students live south and west of campus.

"We developed a map to show us exactly where every student that lived off campus in the immediate area was living, so we know where we need to focus our efforts," said Corcoran.

The police department plans on being tight-lipped about where they are concentrating their efforts, but officials say students will notice more of a presence.

"We have limited resources, both ourselves and Cincinnati, so we are trying to make sure we get the most bang for our buck by putting them in the best place at the best time," the interim chief told FOX19.

UCPD has been working closely with Cincinnati Police and UC's president's office to further develop the safety program.
