AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

The Akron Police Department is investigating a block party on Sumner Street that got out of hand Saturday night.

Akron Police and Akron University Police responded to the party of nearly one thousand college students around midnight.

When police arrived on scene they were hit with thrown beer bottles and cans from party-goers.

Police were then forced to disperse tear gas and smoke.

One car on the street was flipped on its roof by party-goers. 

Around 2:00am, the party died down.

The Akron Police Department is planning to use the video footage taken by individuals and posted on social media sites to make arrests. Those involved could face charges of inciting to riot, rioting and destruction of property.

If those individuals involved are University of Akron students, they will additionally be referred to Student Judicial Affairs for University sanctioning.

The Akron Police Department will have officers out in full force over the next several weekends.
