AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Raymond Altuz points out the spot where his wife was killed by a hit and run driver on Wednesday night right before his eyes. "It nearly killed me."

Raymond and his wife Rebecca were coming back from Circle K in Akron at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4.

As Rebecca crossed Darrow Road she had no chance against a driver who was barreling down the middle of the street.

The suspect, 67-year-old Jimmy Kirkman, was driving a Chevy Trailblazer when he hit the woman, and then took off. He was arrested at his home at 2:40 a.m. Thursday morning, and has been charged with a hit and run.

The victim, identified as 58-year-old Rebecca Altuz, was taken to Akron City Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The morning after the accident the world of Raymond Altuz is turned upside down.  The roses outside his house don't seem as red as usual and the sky is not as blue.  His wife of 33 years now gone.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash and additional charges are expected.

Kirkman has been charged with felony hit and run but those charges are expected to be upgraded.

He is due to have a video court arraignment hearing on Friday, September 6 at 9 a.m. at the Akron Municipal Court.
