Ohio prison system investigating guards missing during suicide watches

19 Action News reporter Scott Taylor shows you the 9 page report that states the guard skipped checking on Billy Slagle's cell and someone changed the electronic logs to cover it up.

Billy Slagle was found hanging in his cell on death row in an Ohio prison on August 4,  just three days before he was to be put to death for the 1987 murder of Mari Anne Pope.

The review of his suicide by the Ohio prison system reveals one of the guards in charge of checking on the death row inmate skipped some of the prison's mandatory 30 minute cell checks.

He was an hour and a half late starting his cell rounds and around 2 in the morning only checked on Slagle every hour and not every 30 minutes.

At 5 a.m. the guard noticed Slagle hanging in his cell.

In addition, the electronic log of the guard's rounds showed he followed procedure but video surveillance of his rounds shows he skipped some and started late.

Prison officials say a second guard was in charge of maintaining that electronic log and it was falsified.

The same type of review is under way on the suicide of Ariel Castro, who also hanged himself in an Ohio prison.  Two guards in connection to Castro's death are on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the review and an investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol

A total of 8 inmates have killed themselves this year at state prison's in Ohio.  All but one of those suicides have died by hanging themselves.

The two guards are on paid administrative leave and if they will face any discipline is still up in the air.
