AMHERST, OH (WOIO) - A First Amendment debate in Amherst after a student wore a sweatshirt displaying pistols to school.
The principal of Amherst Steele High School confirms a female student wore a Smith and Wesson sweatshirt to school on Monday.
The student was called into the office and asked to turn the sweatshirt inside out, wear a new Amherst t-shirt provided by the school, or go home and change. The student opted to go home to change, but when her dad picked her up, they did not return.
The girl's father believes her First Amendment rights were violated, but Principal Mike May says it was not a constitutional violation, rather a violation of the school dress code.
May also said the sweatshirt made some students and staff members uncomfortable.
