Report: Auto-erotic asphyxiation possibility in death of Ariel Castro

Ariel Castro Ariel Castro
(WOIO) -

The Ohio Prison Systems just released their internal findings on convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro's suicide.

The report states Castro hanged himself with sheet attached to hinge of window of his cell last month at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Pickaway County. No suicide note was left. He also had the Bible open and had pictures of his family laid out in a poster board format on the floor.

The report also revealed Castro's pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles. It's unclear what he was doing at the time. These facts, however, were relayed to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for consideration of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation, strangling or suffocating self to heighten sexual arousal and orgasm.

Castro complained about verbal harassment from other inmates and prison staff, but would not mention names. He also thought someone was tampering with his food.

Also among the findings, rounds by guards were not complete and then logs were falsified.

Below is a statement regarding the report:

Director Mohr has reviewed and accepted the recommendations made by the after action review team, and acknowledges immediate steps taken by the Correctional Reception Center to address issues of security rounds being conducted according to policy.

Fred Cohen and Lindsay Hayes, independent consults hired to review DRC's suicide prevention policies and procedures, are in Ohio and Director Mohr met with them yesterday (Wednesday). The Director will continue meeting with Mr. Cohen and Mr. Hayes on an ongoing basis during the duration of their review.

Castro had been sentenced on August 1 to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive in his Seymour Avenue house for over a decade.
