Deputies: ‘Designated driver’ was drunk when she hit police car

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A woman claiming to be the designated driver for her drunk friends had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when she slammed into a police car, according to investigators.

Two Salem police cars were stopped on the side of Liberty Road South near Browning Avenue at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said they had their emergency lights on when a car drove straight toward them.

Salem Officer RJ Smith pulled Officer Eric Ammon out of the way just seconds before the first police car was rear-ended, sending it crashing into the second police car.

No injuries were reported.

Police said the driver, Mercede Ogan, 26, of Salem, claimed to be the designated driver for her two passengers. Deputies said the passengers appeared to be "highly intoxicated."

Deputies then suspected Ogan was driving under the influence. She was arrested on charges of reckless endangering and DUII. At the Marion County Jail, police said she was found to have a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit.

Her 2003 Ford Focus was towed from the scene, along with one of the police cars. The second Salem police car was able to be driven away from the scene.

Ogan posted bail at 1 p.m. Sunday and was released from jail.
