Cancer survivor to give toys to Children's Hospital patients

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

One Grant County teen is making sure all of the patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital are taken care of.

Jacob Vickers, Grant County Gold Squad's Assistant Coach, wasn't always so active on the field. In 2006, Vickers was diagnosed with a serious form of cancer.

During the time that Vickers was in treatment, he spent a lot of birthdays and Christmas' in the hospital where he was recipient of another child's toy drive.

Vickers has been in remission for several years now. However, he still requires surgeries from his years of treatment.

A December surgery could even leave Vickers hospitalized this Christmas but that's the last thing on his mind.

"I already have everything I need so I decided to help get toys together for other kids," said Vickers.

With his brother Ben and other friends in tow, Vickers is spreading his mission across Northern Kentucky.

"I am proud. I don't know any other word to say. I'm happy, proud. He's amazing. It's beautiful to watch him want to give to other people and to watch him be generous. It fills my heart," said Vickers' mother.

Vickers will be collecting toys again next weekend at the Walmart in Dry Ridge from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They will be collecting toys for both boys and girls, newborns to teenagers.
