43 Forum: Saving lives through LifeBanc

My guests and I, Tony Leverette and Rev. Gwendolyn Snell talked about the need to be organ, eye and tissue donors.More >>

Cleveland 19 News teamed up with Lifebanc to introduce you to a Cleveland man who serves as a reminder of how vital organ and tissue donations are.

50 year-old Ray Freeman is doing well after getting a kidney transplant after three years of being on dialysis. Guess who gave him a kidney?

"It's my girlfriend. So, I see her everyday," said Ray.

Their's is no tragic Romeo and Juliette love story. It's a 21st century story of sacrifice and life-giving, true love. Talk about meeting your match!

"She actually did it without my knowledge. She told me a month later and I said no don't do it, cause I didn't want that on her. She decided to do it and hey I feel like a new man," Ray said. "It's a blessing. She matched my blood type and what they call antigens. She matched my antigens. So it was almost like 90% matched to be non-related."

Dr. Charles Modlin of the Cleveland Clinic performed the life-changing surgery.

"One of the things that we are trying to do is educate the community about the importance of organ donation, signing that organ donor registration card," said Dr. Modlin.

Lifebanc can help you understand the process of giving the gift of life by becoming an organ, eye and tissue donor.

There are 20-million Americans with kidney disease and Dr. Modlin says there are another 20-million Americans who don't know they have the disease. He says know your family history and please get tested.

"If your family medical history is significant for high blood pressure or diabetes then you are yourself at greater risk of developing those diseases," Dr. Charles Modlin said.

It's important to know your blood pressure, take your med's and keep your diabetes in check.

Medical Mutual of Ohio has confirmed that an employee sent 45 emails to the wrong person containing personal information for more than 6,000 of its Medicare Advantage customers.  According to a spokesperson for Med Mutual, based in Cleveland, this was an accident because the employee typed in an incorrect email address and the data was going to a third party that didn't have authorization to be looking at private information.
