Mayors of Auburn, Tallahassee make BCS Championship wager

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

There's a lot on the line for the Tigers of Auburn and the Seminoles of Florida as the two prepare to compete in the BCS National Championship. And now, the stakes are getting higher, at least for the mayors of the two cities in which the teams call home.

Monday, Auburn Mayor Bill Ham, Jr. and his counterpart in Tallahassee, Mayor John Marks put a friendly wager on the game that will benefit a worthy non-profit organization.

Mayors Ham and Marks agreed that the losing team's city will give $200 to the Boys & Girls Club of the winning city.

The winning mayor will also get a tasty treat of his own. Should the No. 2 Auburn Tigers defeat the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles, Mayor Marks will be sending a sampling of sausage from Tallahassee's iconic Bradley's Country Store. If the Seminoles manage to end the season with the crystal trophy, Mayor Ham will be sending south some legendary Toomer's Lemonade.

The mayors are both very confident in the teams of their city.

"I have to say we've done pretty well against undefeated teams recently," said Ham. "I'm confident in what Coach Malzahn and this Auburn team are bringing to Pasadena, and I look forward to getting a taste of Bradley's sausage and to Mayor Marks' upcoming generous contribution to our local Boys and Girls Club."

"Auburn is also a great team," admitted Mayor Marks, "but if there's someone out there with any doubt as to who will win, I have one word for them: Unconquered!"

The two teams take the field in Pasadena, California on January 6. For FSU, it will be a chance at winning the national title for the first time since 1999. For Auburn, it will be a chance to win again following a 2010 title. There's also the streak of BCS title wins Auburn hopes to keep alive for the state of Alabama (5) and the SEC (8).
