(WOIO) -

It is brutally cold outside. An arctic air mass known as a polar vortex is spreading dangerously frigid temperatures across most of the nation, including Northeast Ohio.

It's not really about the snow event anymore it's all about the dangerous cold. [Check out the Interactive Radar] The snow belt areas could see another 2-3 inches of new snow, but with the winds it will be hard to measure.

We'll have temperatures that we haven't felt in two decades! You'll start to feel the effects after noon today, but the true arctic air will arrive Tuesday with actual temperatures between 12 below and 2 above, with wind chills between -20 to -40.

It's also a bad idea for children or pets to be outside for an extended period of time during this stretch of bitter cold weather.
