No "snow day": Mail carriers continue working in the bitter cold

Rick Webb has been a mail carrier in Richmond Heights for 29 years. 19 Action News Reporter Dan Deroos walked his route with him for a short while on Tuesday.

"I'd rather be doing this than be behind a desk," says Webb.

House by house for eight hours a day, the mail carriers are out in the elements. There is no shutting down the US Postal Service because of dangerous temperatures.

Webb shared some secrets for staying warm.

"Dress in layers, put Vaseline on the face and try get back to the truck and regroup. What does Vaseline on the face do? Just a moisture, a layer between the wind and your skin otherwise your skin dries out and freezes," says Webb. "It also helps to have a thermos of hot tea and a good lunch my wife made me."

Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Those receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.
