RUSSELL TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - An 18-year-old is being held in connection with the murder of his elderly grandmother in Russell Township, Geauga County.
Ruth Phillips, 81, was found fatally stabbed in the basement of her Cloveridge Road home on Tuesday. Ruth's friend called police and asked them to check on her.
Clayton Phillips was taken into custody a short time later after he fled the scene in his grandmother's car. He was located at a home in Newbury Township.
He is currently being held at the Geauga County Jail on a probation violation. The murder remains under investigation.
19 Action News has learned Clayton Phillips moved up from Texas to live with his paternal grandmother in May.
Court records show the teenage suspect was arrested for marijuana in September, and Phillips recently refused to press felony charges against her grandson after he used her credit card to make expensive purchases.
Neighbors tell 19 Action News Ruth Phillips was always very friendly and would wave when she was outside working in her garden, a place where she grew raspberries.
