Warming Centers open through Wednesday

The City of Shaker Heights is making the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building available to residents who may need refuge from the cold. Because the icy conditions can cause unanticipated outages and burst pipes, residents may need a place to warm up. Those who find themselves in such circumstances can head over to the Community Building, located at 3450 Lee Road any time prior to 9 pm. After 9 pm, call 491-1234 (from a cell phone) or 911 (from a land line) so emergency personnel can arrange to open the building.

The City of Stow has dedicated a Warming Center for Stow residents with nowhere else to go or who are experiencing problems with heat at their home. A Warming Center has been designated at the Community Room at Stow Safety Building. The facility is located on the Stow City Center Campus at the corner of Graham and Darrow Roads in Stow. (3760 Darrow Road.) This opportunity will be available until noon on Wednesday, January 29, at which time weather conditions should return to the normal range. Contact the City of Stow at 330.689.5100 for more information.

The City of Elyria and its community partners are operating a warming center at St. Mary Parish, 320 Middle Avenue - Parish Hall (off St. Mary's Way - between 3rd and 4th street). The shelter will continue operating as long as needed which is projected to be at least 8:00 am Wednesday January 29, 2014. This community collaboration, staffed by the City of Elyria and other participating organizations and volunteers, will offer safe, secure, comfortable shelter and food and beverages to the area's homeless, those living in conditions with low or no heat, or individuals and families that may have broken furnaces or water pipes.

The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio has also opened several area chapters as warming centers on Monday, January 27 through Wednesday, January 29.  The warming centers will be open during business hours, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The center says that this is an opportunity for community members to come in out of the cold during the arctic blast that's expected to hit northeast Ohio this week.
There will be no meal services available at the warming centers.
