AKRON, OH (WOIO) - It was an emotional gathering for Aiden Werner on a frigid Friday night in Akron.
Friends and family got together to keep the little boy in their thoughts and prayers.
Attendees showed support by filling the family's porch with teddy bears and stuffed animals.
"It is absolutely amazing. All this support and love shows the prayers are working," says Rhiannon Barnett, Aiden's mother.
Aiden was hospitalized with severe injuries late last month. Police say his mother's boyfriend beat the two-year-old, leaving him in critical condition.
Kurtis Mathes is charged with child neglect and assault.
"We got MRI results back today. He's out of the woods. So hopefully next week sometime the ventilator's coming out. They're going to get him out of the bed, see what he can do and start therapy from there," says Barnett.
A neighbor organized the gathering.
"Seeing this kid make a recovery and have a life where it almost didn't happen. I just hope God continues to bless this family," says Larry Seeley.
Aiden is still at the Akron Children's Hospital. His family says just recently, he actually squeezed their fingers while they were talking to him.
"I am filled with happiness. The amount of people and the good news today. Today is amazing," says Barnett.
It's too early to tell just how much Aiden will recover from his injuries. Friends and family say they'll keep on praying and hoping.
