Jury finds Kirby guilty in Hopkins Co. murder trial

A jury has found Kelly Kirby guilty in a Hopkins County murder trial.

Kirby is guilty of criminal abuse and manslaughter in the death of her 4-year-old stepson, Cayden.

Last minute testimony concluded Tuesday morning. First from the defense with a former Kentucky Medical Examiner stating that Cayden could have died from a skateboard accident.

The prosecution called three rebuttal witnesses, one of which was long time friends with Kelley and said, 'Kelley could not stand his kids and she could not stand Amanda (Cayden's mother).'

Both sides then presented their closing arguments.

"Kelly come into this courtroom and looked each of you in the eye. She said, 'I have never spanked my children. I've never even spanked them with my hand.' That's a fact. That's what she said. Her best friend, and look at those photographs, they're the best of friends. She said, 'I saw her spank her daughter,'" said David Massamore, Hopkins County Commonwealth Attorney.

The jury recommended 20 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
