I am David Sheets responding to Bill Applegate's execution overkill editorial.
I cannot condone the pain and suffering Dennis McGuire endured but I feel numb to his ordeal when I consider the horrendous death of his victim and the victim's unborn child. I'm sure that the state did not administer the new drugs knowing that the outcome would turn out as it did.
In my opinion, I don't believe that any execution can be painless. I am not against the ultimate price for heinous crimes as some people need to meet their maker sooner than later.
It is very hard for me as a law-abiding individual to see all the crime and death in the world and feel compassion for anyone but the victim. It's a shame that the surviving family members had to wait so long to finally see that justice has been done. Let's stop cruel and unusual murders because that's what a civilized nation does.
