Happy Trails Farm animals die in Ravenna barn fire

RAVENNA, OH (WOIO) -

On Friday night four animals were killed in a fire that overtook an animal shelter in Ravenna.

On February 14, at 9 p.m., a fire erupted in the sheep and goat barn at the Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary located at 5623 New Milford Road.

The staff reports that a pot-belly pig, two goats and a rooster didn't make it out alive.

"We were absolutely crushed to know animals perished in this fire," says director Annette Fisher.

Two goats named Odessa and Natasha along with two barn cats named Myles and Lola were rescued and moved to safety.

According to staff, the goats and Myles are healthy and doing well. Lola is being examined by the vet for possible smoke inhalation, but expected to make a full recovery.

The facility takes in abused, abandoned and neglected farm animals from all over Ohio. Many animals take part in the unique farm animal visitation program where some of the animals go to nursing homes as part of therapy for the elderly.

"They can go into nursing homes, schools and hospice centers and just their presence brings joy," says Fisher.

Next month the Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary is scheduled to hold its big fundraiser, now made even more important by last night's fire. 

"This fundraiser will hopefully help us replace the building that was lost and help us get back on our feet," says Fisher.

Happy Trails released the following statement:

"…We are very grateful to the four fire departments who arrived at the scene to contain the fire. Fortunately the fire did not spread to other nearby barns and shelters and was isolated in the one building. The barn is a total loss. The cause of the fire is not verified at this time, but it is suspected that either a heat lamp or possibly an electrical cord may be the source of the blaze. We appreciate everyone's prayers and support at this difficult time."

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

    Medical Mutual of Ohio has confirmed that an employee sent 45 emails to the wrong person containing personal information for more than 6,000 of its Medicare Advantage customers.  According to a spokesperson for Med Mutual, based in Cleveland, this was an accident because the employee typed in an incorrect email address and the data was going to a third party that didn't have authorization to be looking at private information.
