BARBERTON, OH (WOIO) - Barberton residents are upset over a proposal to construct a parking lot in the middle of their neighborhood.
"It's going to lower property values, they've never had a parking lot there before, a parking lot is not going to raise the values of those homes," says resident Tom Walters.
Summa Hospital of Barberton is currently trying to purchase the land.
The purchase agreement with the Barberton Board of Education is contingent upon a rezoning request that is currently being considered by City Council.
"I think they have enough room to do it where they are and that's why building a new deck and build upwards instead if outwards and I question there need for additional space at this point," says Barberton councilman John Lysenko.
At this point, nearly half of city council members are opposed and the residents of the area are seeking support for their cause to oppose the rezoning request.
The land has been vacant for the past seven years since Oakdale School was demolished.
