Shockoe Bottom merchants slam Shamrock the Block move

Business owners in Shockoe Bottom are upset over news the annual Shamrock the Block event is moving to the Boulevard.

"Shamrock the Block is Shockoe Bottom," said Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association President David Napier. "It's nowhere else."

However, event organizers just decided to take the crowd to the Boulevard.

"Every restaurant down here is losing their best day of the year," said Napier.

Napier feels the viral video of last year's police involved brawl delivered the knockout blow.

"Blame the guy in the green underwear and red suspenders for this," said Napier. "That's the guy I would hold responsible for this whole mess right now."

Event organizers say the issue goes beyond security.

"They outgrew it," said Brooks Stone with Scott's Addition Business Association. "It is just as simple as that."

Stone says the new route will accommodate an expected 30,000 people, starting at Movieland Cinema and going three blocks toward Broad Street.

"We will not sleep for the next month," said Stone. "We've got a lot to do. There is plenty of space for vendors. There is plenty of space for a stage and music... lots of parking."

Meanwhile, Napier says Shockoe Bottom merchants still plan to have music and welcome crowds on Saturday, March 15th.
