Tips for avoiding a flooded basement

There is a good chance many people will have to deal with basement flooding as temperatures rise this week, but there are some things you can do now to protect your home from flooding.

Flooding can cause thousands of dollars in damage. If it happens to you, you might end up calling Wojo's Heating/AC and Plumbing to take care of it, but on Wednesday Wojo's ran into a problem of their own.

"Our line that the sump pump pumps into has frozen underground, all the way out to the creek," explained Tom Wojciechowski.

That caused their garage to flood. Wojciechowski says there was no way to prevent that, but there are some things homeowners can do to protect their basements.

One thing is to shovel snow away from the home. And he suggests getting a back up for your pump.

"If you don't have a battery back-up or some type of back-up sump pump, you really need to get one," he said. "That's probably one of the most important things."

If your basement does end up flooding, Wojciechowski says you should first check the circuit breaker on your sump pump, then make sure it's plugged in properly. Finally, check the ground fault switches to make sure your sump pump is working.

"You have to find the root of the problem," he said.

If all else fails, you should contact a plumber or the guys at Wojo's to get the water out.
