Melting snow and ice may cause Rocky River to flood

ROCKY RIVER, OH (WOIO) -

In January the Rocky River started to thaw and large pieces of ice took out docks.

Then, it got cold again.

When the mercury drops a second time, the water could flood over the banks.

"We are worried because this is a very unusual phenomenon right now. It's never been like this before," said Marty Kennedy, a Rocky River resident.

Kennedy, who has lived along the river for 50 years, has seen four major floods and she is taking precautions and evacuating her family.

"The ice broke up earlier and we did get water in the yard. Now there are chunks all the way to the bottom of the river and that's not going to move, " says Kennedy.

Many families living in homes where their backyards back up to the river, are bracing to evacuate.

The plan right now is wait for the thaw and keep on eye on the river level.

Rocky River resident Dan Marsalek said, "When we see it starting to come over, we flee."

All of the family's keepsakes are off the floor and the window drapes have been pulled up to a height where the river water can't reach the material.

"The problem is how high.  The last time in 1994 it was three and half feet in the house and its hard to get things up higher than that," says Marsalek.

The river is predicted to start to rise sometime overnight on Feb. 20.
